FEVER IN A HEATWAVE
Today I may go shoot guns.
I haven’t held one in my hand
for almost a week
—7 days of discipline?
No,
just too hot and humid
to wear the belted jeans
I need to hold the holsters.
Guns are heavy,
without the belt
my shorts fall and show my ass
to a world that needs no more ass.
There is enough ass
already running rampant in this era
without me adding unintentionally to it.
My palms do wait the weight though,
hope for cooler air to comfort them.

Well said. There's certainly enough ass to go around. In fact, I wish we could cut back a tad.
ReplyDeleteI agree with that sentiment Charles, NOLA and Chicago seem to have quite a bit more national ass exposure then Detroit but we have at least on average 8 shootings per day and 3 deaths, not restricted to any particular part of town but mine is ranked nationally as one of the top 3 most violent.
DeleteGosh, I haven't hefted a gun in months! Maybe years. You'd think with bears wandering around town I'd be more concerned. Instead, I just avoid the bike paths that growl.
ReplyDeleteIf I only had bears to be concerned with Alice I would forgo the guns, there are other ways to dissuade most bears (Grizz and Polar being the exception). Never been charged by a bear but I was charged by a moose cow once--that sucked!
DeleteAround here it's Grizz, but I see a lot more moose. Yeah, it sucks when they charge.
DeleteAh, guns, not for me or mine.Though, as I child, I never worried about my dad's hunting trips, and the glorious meals we had after each experience.
ReplyDeleteRosaria and I respect 100% that position of them being for food acquisition only. yet when the chief of police not once but twice tells the citizens who legally can carry to learn the law and train up and carry then it is something to think about.
DeleteIn Detroit he readily admits that there is no police response time available for active shootings and that the PD is a mainly reactive force. I am not gun crazy, but I do like to shoot, I do not hunt--I have a 16 year old granddaughter who provides me all the game meat I want.
I wish you could explain belted pants to the old men in our neighborhood. Ass-cracks galore!
ReplyDeleteJean I simply do not know what to say--I have never liked no wearing a belt, and now I have lost some weight so even the belt I have needs another new hole. I suppose if my ass crack was pretty i would be more willing to show it but I am still young enough to have some dignity.
DeleteOnce upon a time ... Oct.09,1986 to be exact ... I shot 15 and some gophers ... because dat da my daughter Jennifer Rose died and shot many more after dat ... and it was so cool, the feeling 2 kill, I mean, U understand? ... ya? ... meouwpoppa ... spank me silly 4 dat remark, but me will always say (with a cigarette between ma lips) ... now dat was cool ... smiles ... Love U much, cat.
ReplyDeleteMy guns say safely locked up and come out and are oiled when I move... I haven't shot them in over 30 years! But good for you for keeping asses at bay.
ReplyDeleteJeff, being relatively new to handguns, I still like shooting them. But I can't carry when wearing shorts because at minimum I would have to wear underpants to not show my own ass. At times comfort trumps safety.
DeleteGoodness that is heavy and hot to carry around, in these times of crazy political campaign. Am smiling about the ass, part, smiles.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your day, waiting for cooling air and cooler heads to prevail.
Grace, I admit I do conceal carry--and will continue to do so, I also admit that if I had not trained to be calm in the face of stress, I would be like most every other ass with a gun--belt or not.
DeleteI love the structural build up from within the pattern itself, mainly by association ( Ass from ass). Also the rhetorical questioning and the ensuing catechismic building. The pun (wait the weight) in the punch line towards the end also seem to emerge from the imagery of upholstry 'waiting' the weight :) . A brilliant fusion of design with spontaniety.
ReplyDeleteThe gift of still having an good eye Mona is that one can not shy away from reality, the problem of having a good eye is seeing reality for what it is. Lord i do love your analytical view to writing.
DeleteHappy Birthday to you! :)
ReplyDeletetomorrow!
Thank you Mona--it was different, my DiL who is mother to my grandson born on the same day in 2014, brought cake and 2 year old trouble over. (bwahahahaha the boy does not like being told no). All in all it was good, I even got my nap in.
DeleteI have only held a gun once in my life...not my thing, I guess :)
ReplyDeleteOE--Guns, rifles pistols, cannons, rockets, mortars and on and on and on--are everyone's thing seeing as we pay for the most lethal of them all under the guise of national defense.
DeleteI personally like shooting guns, not for the feeling of power because there is not one, but for the challenge of hitting a 6" circle 50 feet away. For clarity's sake I DO have a concealed pistol license, I do conceal carry, I will stop when a 6 month period occurs where they do not report a body, a carjacking, a forced entry into an occupied dwelling, and various other crimes of violence within a 1 mile radius of my home.
ha. yes, there is too much ass.
ReplyDeletei have not shot in a while, not a pistol. i have shot bow. we have considered buying a handgun for my wife. more for security sake in an uncertain future. i need to teach her how to shoot. we went shooting about 6 months ago.
comfort def trumps need, because underwear is def unbearable - all the more so for the heat. smiles.
I like shooting. I like my glock. I think an outing to the range sounds in order. Shorts? No!
