NO METAPHOR WANTED

LOOKING DAY AND NIGHT
Northern lights illuminate
far more than the aurora borealis ever could.
Same with the whirly birds
not raining death and destruction down on us.
Lightening bugs and maple seeds
are a wonder to behold in their usual display.

One trying to mate as the other
is trying to find soil to propagate in their way.
The lights go out after a season,
the seeds don’t take, raked, bagged, and burnt.
This is not a metaphor for or against abortion.
Simply nature working in front of me.

  1. I am going ot have to ponder this--but the whirly seeds falling and bugs with butts that light have always amazed me.

    1. The seeds are common Jeff, but the lightening bugs have not been much around the past few years, decades. I plant clover for the pollinators perhaps there is something I could do to attract and feed them? Research!

  2. Profligate is the word for nature when it comes to the seeds she produces.

    1. True that and the way those seeds adapt to the environment they are grown in Charles. Darwinism in nature is stunning at times with the rapidity of adaptation.

  3. I have been watching a lot of nature documentaries, and I marvel how they flow and seem to know, the tides of every season.

    1. Grace--when I was outdoors far more than I am these days, everything I saw in nature from the flights of birds to the levels of waters were signs for the stupid human.

  4. But did the tree choose, or did we?

    1. We choose what we do as the tree does what its environment dictates Alice.

    1. Vesper--I honestly believe from the empirical data that we are reaching a tipping point--we are giving great boost to nature's changes and not us as much as them in our future will have to adapt.

  7. Northern lights are the most amazing thing ever, U ever seen them, meouwpoppa? ... cuz they make U be in awe again ... even after the most terrible heart break experience ... but have "human seeds" raked, bagged and burnt is another story ... I hope, those who do, will burn in hell ... (truly therapeutic abortions excluded) ... Love U, cat.

    1. Meowmomma--Of course I have seen the Northern Lights a couple of times, once even from my front porch.

This poem is truly a metaphor about how not everything in poetry is a metaphor, but rather pointing towards reality, a specific reality.

Since you brought it up and in a very clear fashion I am all for men staying the hell out of women's health issues, and for individual liberties to define by the individual woman what is her proper course of action when it comes to her own health.

I doubt seriously that Canada tries to regulate so many areas regarding women's health issues. We do not regulate guns as stringently as we regulate vaginas.

By the by this was written before the latest Supreme Court ruling on abortion, which I find ironic.

    1. Calvin although my first thought was snarky--my second one probably the more appropriate; as long as we stop killing off the natural and do what we can to give it room to re-emerge and self heal, it will continue on in it's beauty.

  11. I think that nature is unparalleled in its beauty and wonder. I do not see lightning bugs anymore and that makes me sad. I miss seeing them light up the night as a youngster.

    1. Some years I never see them anymore either, but this year a few, which I consider to be better than none at all.
