GIVE IT UP NOT IN

IT ISN’T EASY BE RID OF THE EMOTION LONGEST KNOWN

We run—away on so many roads
it is often too hard to tell what
it is exactly we are running from.
Roads named booze, guns,
drugs, money, rights, wrongs,
fun, woe, misery and so many more
that oft times we can’t barely perceive
how fast our feet carry us as we flee.

I know basically what we run from
my dear gentle ones,
fear generally speaking
though that be the simplest answer
it is the easiest one to give in the light of the sun.

I have seen so much fear in them I barely know
and those I hold so dear
yet understand not a whit of it.
I ask with all sincerity to offer me some clarity
on what it is I am supposed to be afraid of?
Of what am I notionally to be scared of?
Am I to take on the demons others dread
when I am certain it’s there
your fears live only inside your own head?

I can see, empathize, but long ago I realized
that the worst of any fear is when
it makes you run away from who you really are.
Forces speed down a road
your understanding is truly
better off walking down slow.

Never run when you can walk,
never walk when you can lean,
never lean when you can sit
never sit when you can lie down.
When it comes to any fear
take the easiest position for you
to think the frightful confusion out.

  1. I ran. A lot. Trying to fill the emptiness. Maybe even in that there was fear of the silence and being alone. And empty.Through it I became someone else as well. I hardened a lot.

    1. X- one does become hardened to not so much fears as what fear causes other people to do, even what we do motivated by our own fears. Once i got too tired to run I was forced to stop and look, figure out my being and do some house cleaning. I honestly do not know of anything that causes fear in me anymore. There is NO use for it, not even to preserve a life lived long enough and well.

    1. That, Jean, is the nature of the beast inside. If it would make me lose some weight I may give place to fear but as it doesn't *shrug* it is of no use to rational thought.

  4. Fear paralyzes or makes us flee, but I like the final option of lying down!

    1. Thank you Erik, but the only sage I am is the kind that grows garden born. I do not understand enough.
