AMERICAN REALISM

RELATIONSHIPS SYMBIOTIC
Look to the city on the river when you need to see everything you don’t want your home to be. I have my fences, walls, and gun (dreadful thing, I used to shun) oiled and ready for the days that have long been dreaded but now have come. I have no lust to kill, but deep in my heart I know I will.

He stands in front of his squatters place, orating to faces only he can see, I find it amusing until he turns and looks at me. There is no certainty that he sees me as more than one in the covert crowd, his oration goes on unabated, about a reality unrelated to anything that dwells here in this insane space.

She’s turning a trick out in front of the house, good thing her john isn’t a screamer as he blows his load quiet, like a mouse. In the morning light I get to go out and sweep up the condom left behind. It’s not the prostitution of body and soul that I mind but they think I am blessed by picking up the mess.

A twelve year old boy rides his new bicycle all around the streets. He’s fast and reckless knowing that no one would dare try to take it from his ass. He earned the two wheeled thing doing deliveries for the drug king. He travels well and sees more than a kid his young age normally would.

  1. At least the 12 year old is earning his way. Then again. Kids see far more these days, and on the street you see all the more. I wonder thoguh if it is not just all part of the cycle of the water in the toilet bowl. Round and round til flushed out

    1. Yeah X at 12 i was earning my way as well. I cut lawns, shoveled snow, pulled weeds, carried newspapers.

i agree with the second part as well, i am rather disappointed at movies we classify as PG 13, violence, overt sexuality if not nothing showing sex. We are guilty as a culture of glorifying the lifestyle in our entertainment, music, TV. No kid is a born thug. But they pick it up pretty quickly.

  2. I admire the different snapshots, specially the end of the boy riding his new bicycle ~ He has earned it, I agree, but I hope he sees far more than the drugs running in his city ~

Hope you are well Mark and enjoying the warmer weather ~

  3. I think I'll have to take watching the bird drama in our backyard.

    1. Oh yeah Charles we have plenty of drama to watch from our porch--I especially like the 10pm to 3am bacchanals that occur abut 5 times a week.

  4. You do a wonderful job of capturing the grime an grit of city life. So alien to what is outside my own door, yet culturally familiar.

    1. Alice, that's the problem it's really not a unique Detroit issue but you can read the same story in every major daily in America.
