HE COULD'VE BEEN PRESIDENT

LINEAR
No one ever starts over,
the only direction is forward.
I can ask for a chance to do it again
but life simply says “no way friend,
past is passed
now that you’re stopped where to from here.”

Wasted time and wasted life
can’t be regained and pains remain
but subtly they slowly
fade to bruised background noise.

Boys know from near the start
they have to be smart
to fight a way to the top,
while girls are taught
that enough is enough
when it’s really not.
I never really knew times when I was tough
or days when enough was not.

I like the solitude that comes with age,
especially the early morning older me,
when I have the cold trying to bite
as the world wakes while I watch,
smoke another one knowing that
there is nothing more coming my way,
except less of what I had
more of what I don’t,
not that it matters
the only direction is forward.
Because no one starts over.

  2. I often have imagined starting over. Can never happen though. Too bad but that's the way it is

  3. So true, Mark. We don't get do-overs in life. We attempt them and we fail them.

  4. When we migrated to Canada my family and I had to start over ~ I wouldn't do it again knowing how hard it is ~ And I like that solitude that comes with age ~ I guess it comes with acceptance that things aren't likely to change much ~

Wishing you Happy Holidays Mark ~ Appreciate your thoughtful comments on my blog ~ All the best ~
